The reading changes at midnight Central Time, and it stays the same all day.
But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
Plain English
"God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." Commendeth means shows or proves. God did not wait until we had cleaned ourselves up. While we were still sinners, Christ died for us, and that death is how God shows His love.
Devotional
Picture someone paying a debt you could not pay, and doing it while you were still in the wrong, not after you became easy to like. That is close to this verse. Christ's death was not a reward for good behavior. It was love aimed at sinners, which includes us.
