Plain English
"Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." Hath means has. The greatest love is not a warm feeling that costs nothing, because it is love willing to give up life itself for friends. Jesus said this as the One who would do it.
Devotional
A parent who steps between a child and a moving car shows love in a split second. There is no time to look brave. Jesus speaks of a love like that, and greater: laying down His life for His friends. His cross is that love, given on purpose.
