Plain English
Paul writes, "The wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." Wages are the pay someone earns, and sin's wage is death. Eternal life is not a wage we can earn by being impressive. It is God's gift through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Devotional
A paycheck at the end of the week shows what the work earned, down to the dollar. You would not call that envelope a surprise present. Sin's pay is death. Eternal life comes another way, handed to us through Jesus, a gift we could never save enough to buy.
