Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.
Plain English
James says, "Faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone." Hath not works means it has no deeds joined to it, and trust in Jesus is meant to move hands, words, and plans. He is not teaching that good deeds earn salvation. He is teaching that faith left by itself, with no obedience, is not living faith.
Devotional
A lamp stored in a closet never lights the hallway. The bulb may be real, but it does nobody good while it stays unused. A person can agree that Jesus is Lord and still refuse to forgive, to help, or to tell the truth. Living faith gets up and does the thing God has asked.
