The righteous cry, and the LORD heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles. The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.
Plain English
The psalm says, "The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit." Nigh means near, and a contrite spirit is humble and sorry, not hard and proud. He hears the cry of the righteous and is able to bring them out of their troubles. He also stays near while the heart is still broken, which matters on the day help feels slow.

You take the hard phone call in the parked car so the house will not hear you cry. The news sits in your chest like a stone. You do not need a polished prayer for God to be near. He is close to the brokenhearted, and He hears the cry of His people.
