In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.
Plain English
"In him was life; and the life was the light of men", and in Jesus is life, and that life is our light. "The light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not", and shineth means shines. "Comprehended it not" means the darkness did not overcome the light or put it out. The dark is real, and it has not swallowed Jesus.
Devotional
The power goes out, and a flashlight makes a small bright circle in the kitchen while the rest of the room stays dark. The dark does not swallow the beam, just as the darkness did not overcome the light of Jesus. In him was life, and that life is the light of men.
