For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
Plain English
"Unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given," and "the government shall be upon his shoulder," so the weight of rule rests on this child. His name shall be called "Wonderful," full of wonder, and "Counsellor," a Counselor whose wisdom you can trust. He is "The mighty God," God himself, strong to save, and "The everlasting Father," whose fatherly care for his people never ends. He is "The Prince of Peace," the ruler who brings real peace with God, and the child who is born carries these great names.

People lean over a cradle and say a baby's name softly, hoping the child will grow into something good. Isaiah says the child who is born already carries the names Wonderful, Counselor, the mighty God, the everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace. The government is on his shoulder, not on yours. You can rest your weight on the son who was given.
