The reading changes at midnight Central Time, and it stays the same all day.

Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;

Titus 3:5King James Version

Plain English

Paul says we are saved "not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy." Good deeds we have done are not the cause. Mercy is. The washing of regeneration means a new birth, a cleansing that makes us new, and the Holy Ghost is the Holy Spirit who renews us.

Devotional

Work clothes can be scrubbed until your arms ache, and the stain from the shop still shows. You cannot wash your own record clean that way. God saves by mercy. He gives a new beginning by His Spirit, not a gold star for how hard you scrubbed.
