The reading changes at midnight Central Time, and it stays the same all day.
Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
Plain English
Jesus says, "Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy." Blessed means living under God's glad kindness, and the merciful both give mercy and receive it. This is not a bargain that earns salvation. It is the way of people who know they need mercy too.
Devotional
A grandchild's elbow sends a water glass off the side table, and the water runs toward the rug. The child freezes, waiting for the size of your voice. Mercy kneels with a towel instead of a lecture. People who have received mercy from God have a reason to hand it on in a small household mess.
