'Create in me a clean heart, O God' is a prayer only God can answer. Create means He makes something new, and renewing a right spirit means He makes the inner life right and steady again. God can make a person new on the inside.

Some stains do not yield to a quick rinse at the sink. They need a real washing, and sometimes the cloth itself has to be made new. You cannot scrub your own heart into holiness, but you can ask God to create a clean heart.
