Plain English
'Except the Lord build the house' means unless the Lord builds it, the builders labor in vain, and 'labour' means labor. The watchman waketh, or stays awake, in vain if the Lord is not keeping the city. Work hard, and ask God to build with you.
Devotional
A frame can look impressive until a hard wind shows it was never truly set. Nails and long days matter, and they are not enough by themselves. Ask the Lord to build the house, whether that house is a home, a church, or the work in your hands.
