The reading changes at midnight Central Time, and it stays the same all day.
Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations: That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:
Plain English
Peter says you "greatly rejoice," even though "for a season," for a while, "ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations." Heaviness means grief, and manifold temptations means many kinds of trials. Your faith is "tried with fire," as gold is tested, and it is "much more precious than of gold that perisheth," gold that wears out. The aim is praise, honor, and glory "at the appearing of Jesus Christ."
Devotional
A jeweler heats a small piece of gold until the trash in it rises to the top. The fire is hot, and the gold does not pretend otherwise. Faith can feel that heat in a hard season. Peter says tested faith will matter more than gold when Jesus appears.
