Give thanks to the Lord, "for he is good," and the reason is marked by the word because: "his mercy endureth for ever." That mercy is his steadfast love, the kind that does not expire when we fail. Thanks rests on who he is, not on a perfect week.

A borrowed rake came back late, and the irritation wants to camp in the garage. Psalm 118 puts thanks on a firmer base than that mood. Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, because his mercy endures forever. His mercy outlasts a small grudge, and you can let the irritation go before night.
