The reading changes at midnight Central Time, and it stays the same all day.
And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.
Plain English
Shepherds were "abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night," staying out on the night watch to guard the sheep. "The angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them." "They were sore afraid" means they were terribly frightened. The coming of Jesus was announced to working people in the dark, and the Bible tells you they were afraid.
Devotional
Night work is quiet until it suddenly is not. The shepherds were keeping watch over their flock when the glory of the Lord shone around them. They were sore afraid, and that fear was honest. God did not choose them because they were already calm, and he met workers who were awake in a field.
